Covid Barbie and Ken Costume Box Tutorial

This year for my daughter's birthday, she wanted a bounce house and it to be "Barbie themed." What better way to have Barbie and Ken come than as "Covid" Barbie and Ken. Comes with gloves and mask once unboxed. This project took me hours but turned out really quite perfect. My sister and her boyfriend were the perfect Barbie and Ken too. Plus I will hands down use the costume for Trick Or Treating this year! Very Covid safe! haha. So here is EVERYTHING you need to make your own.

Total Project Hours: 12 hours
Total Price for 2 costumes: Roughly $80

What you need:

Wardrobe Box

Hot Pink Spray Paint with Primer

Pink Reversible Wrapping Paper

Window Insulation Shrink Kit

6 Straps

Print outs
Mattel Brand (needs to be sized 5x5), Barbie, Ken, stars, Covid-19, Barbie and Ken Pic with Masks on all sized to standard paper size

You will also need: 4 shoe boxes, 1 inch thick upholstery cushion, Glue Gun, Scissors, Duct Tape, box cutter... and patience lol

Step One:
Hot glue Top of box and add tape for extra security from inside.

Step two:
Time to Spray Paint! Spray the front only! Make sure your paint has a primer in it.

Step three:
Cut out your prints and hot glue where you want them on your Barbie front

Step four:
Cut your Barbie Box Front openings. I added a hand hole in front and also 2 circular air holes on the sides. You will NEED air holes. Measure where your shoulders will sit with the straps and cut slip holes. Also cut your holes for your waste. Remember the shoe box will sit on lower back. Here is what the inside will look like:

Step five: Time to add your inside panel of wrapping paper. Use the Polka dot side of the reversible wrapping paper. Hot glue.

Step Five: Wrap the outside sides and back with the solid pink wrapping paper. I folded around the edges so it was a softer look. Hot glue then cut where holes are.

Step Six: Now wrap the shoe boxes and add your cushion. Show boxes should lay on lower back and one on back of head. Glue to Box. The Shoe boxes will help keep the box from slipping back or forward.

Step Seven: Lace your straps through the holes you cut!

Step Eight: Add the Plastic film from the inside on the box. Glue pretty tight so it doesn't look loose. Hot Glue and cut excess off.

Step Nine: Time to try on! You need someone to hold it up for you to slip in through the bottom. Once your straps are tight and secured you are finished!

Step Ten: Grab some gloves and mask to accessorize and wear your favorite Barbie hair style and clothes!

Have a Happy and Safe Halloween!

Pro Tip: If you use super glue at all and get it all over your hand like I did, all you need is some nail polish remover and a cotton ball :) haha.. Def almost super glued my fingers together. Hot glue works just fine!
